STUDENT VISA · COSTS, FEES AND ANAGRAFE OFFICES

Visa costs, fees and Anagrafe office addresses.

The reference figures that the Italian consulate and immigration offices usually expect from international students: financial proof, residence permit fees, SSN enrolment, health insurance price ranges, work allowance. You will also find the addresses of the local Anagrafe offices (registry office at the Comune) in our four cities. These are indicative and may be updated by the relevant authorities: always check the official consulate or Questura websites before paying.

08 - Costs and financial requirements (reference)

The figures below are the costs and thresholds that Italian consulates and immigration offices usually expect from international students. They are indicative and may be updated by the relevant authorities: always check the official consulate or Questura websites before paying.

Financial proof for the student visa. The Italian consulate requires proof of sufficient funds for the duration of the stay: historically ~€910 per month of residence (scholarship certificate, bank statement, guarantor's declaration or equivalent). The exact figure may vary depending on the consulate and the year.

Course-hours requirement. For the student visa, the course must provide at least 80 hours of lessons per month. Our Standard format (20 hours per week × 4 = 80 hours per month) and Light format meet this threshold; the 16-week minimum applies for visa-eligibility purposes.

Residence permit costs - first application. Three payments at the Post Office. Approximate total: ~€116.

Residence permit renewal. Roughly the same three-payment structure as the first application. Renewal also requires updated proof of financial means (bank statement, scholarship or guarantor's cover) of about €5,825 per academic year (depending on the consulate).

Health insurance - minimum cover. Italian consulates require an insurance policy valid in Italy with minimum medical cover of €30,000 for the visa application. Indicative private policies for students: ~€71 for a six-month policy, ~€121 for a 12-month policy. Recommended provider: Blue Assistance (see section 06).

Voluntary SSN enrolment. Voluntary enrolment in the Italian National Health Service (iscrizione volontaria al SSN), at an annual cost of about €149.77, gives full access to Italian public healthcare and to a medico di base (general practitioner). Optional but recommended for stays longer than one academic year.

Work allowance while studying. Anyone holding a valid study residence permit may work in Italy up to 20 hours per week and for a maximum of 1,040 hours per year. To renew the permit you must pass your course exams each year.

What you cannot do without the residence permit. Until the residence permit is issued (the period after the receipt) you cannot: open an Italian bank account, sign rental or service contracts (including a phone line), or formally enrol in the SSN.

09 - Anagrafe offices - useful addresses

The Ufficio Anagrafe (registry office) at the local Comune is where you register your residence in Italy. Useful reference addresses for our four cities:

Milan. Anagrafe Comune di Milano. Registration by email to ServiziAlCittadino@postacert.comune.milano.it with the subject "APR, First name, Surname". Attach your codice fiscale (tax code) and university enrolment certificate in Italian. Florence. Anagrafe Città Metropolitana di Firenze, P.za della Libertà - 50129 Firenze. Turin. Anagrafe Comune di Torino, Via della Consolata 23 - 10122 Torino. Mantua. Anagrafe Comune di Mantova, Via Pietro Frattini 60 - 46100 Mantova.

Check with your home country the implications of permanently transferring your residence to Italy.
